Our historic little chapel.

Our church is a small village chapel situated on the edge of the Peak District National Park and easily accessible from both Manchester and Sheffield. The building is of considerable historic interest both to the general social historian, and to specialists with a particular interest in Methodism and John Wesley. We have a small, but regular and caring congregation, meeting every Sunday at 10.45am, and fortnightly at 6pm.
Opened in 1782, St. Johns is the only non-conformist chapel in Hayfield, and is one of the oldest Methodist churches in the world. Research at the time of our bicentenary celebrations established it as the 13th oldest in the UK, and John Wesley, who was in the area at the time, in all probability opened it. For its historical interest and simple beauty, the chapel is a Grade 2 listed building.
More than just a building, however, St. John’s is very much a living church. The members play a full part in the life of the local community, and the premises are widely used by village groups. With a relatively small membership, we are unable to independently offer a full range of church activities such as might be found in some larger suburban or town churches. The good relations we enjoy with other nearby local churches, particularly our local Anglican church, make these conveniently available nearby. Full details of our activities can be found here.
We particularly welcome new people to our fellowship, irrespective of their stage on life's journey, and see ourselves as a learning community seeking to build each other up. If you would like to know more about our beliefs then please go to the "Our beliefs" page, where we hope you will find some helpful material.
The chapel and adjoining hall are available for hire. Contact us for details info@stjohnshayfield.org.uk
We hope you enjoy exploring our web site, as much as we have enjoyed building it!
